How Important is Sports in Our Life

According to a report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human services issued in 2012, sports participation in the United States has reached record levels. During the academic year 2010 to 2011, 55 percent of high school students took part in sports. Both children and adults can benefit from sport as it gives opportunities to get exercise and spend time with other people in a productive environment.

Physical Benefits

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, partaking in sport activities can make you stronger and healthier, thus lowering the rate of obesity. People who engage in sports will have the benefit of developing muscles and burning calories. Active people have a lower chance of contracting diabetes and high blood pressure. Regular exercise by means of sports can lead to a better functioning of the heart and lungs. In addition, some sports – like soccer, baseball and hockey – have a tendency to leave a lasting positive impact from childhood.

Academic Excellence

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reported that people who engage in sports tend to do better at school than those who don’t. Student athletes get better grades and score higher on standardized tests. They are also reported to have a better chance of getting into college with lower dropout rates.

Building Character Values

Sport plays an important role in giving character values. Sports help teach values like honesty, fair play and teamwork. Following rules and learning to respect teammates and opponents can definitely prove to be a very desirable trait. Graciously suffering a loss or experiencing a victory can teach people a lot about being humble and in a general sense, competition can teach people about self-respect, confidence and stress management. Being the captain of a team can teach people about leadership.
